AgWO Community Support

Farmers take care of Ontarians. We take care of farmers. Building wellness into everyday agricultural life.

From livestock and equipment to crops and land, people in agriculture are hard-working and skilled at taking care of so many things. But taking care of their own mental health and well-being can be a challenge.

Today’s farmers face a wide range of competing demands, including everything from unpredictable weather to unstable markets, all of which can weigh on their mental health.

As part of CMHA Ontario, Agriculture Wellness Ontario offers a suite of programs that bring mental health education, counselling services and enhanced community support to rural and agricultural communities across the province.

The agricultural community plays a vital role in ensuring Ontario has a healthy economy and local food security. They support the well-being of all Ontarians — and we’re here to support them.

We understand the agricultural community because
it’s our community too

Agricultural workers face unique mental health challenges shaped by the pressures of the industry and the realities of rural life. Below are some of the most common concerns we hear from the community — each one valid and worth talking about.

Farming is more than just a job — it’s a lifestyle. This can make it difficult to identify and manage ongoing stress which can ultimately lead to or exacerbate physical and mental illness. Both positive and negative stressors exist but when too much negative stress is present, it must be managed. Check out our Navigating Stress in Agriculture Growth Workshop to learn more.

Long hours, unpredictable conditions, uncertainty and the pressure to keep things running can take a serious toll. Anxiety and depression often show up as exhaustion, irritability or a feeling of being “off” — even if everything looks fine on the outside.

Some consume alcohol or other substances as a way to cope with stress, isolation or sleep issues. It may start small, but over time it can impact relationships, safety and overall well-being.

The cost of inputs, market fluctuations, debt and uncertainty about the future can weigh heavily. For many in agriculture, financial stress isn’t just about money — it’s about legacy, pride and responsibility.

Beyond personal finances, broader concerns — like trade policies, climate impacts or global demand — can fuel ongoing stress. These big-picture worries and uncertainties are hard to escape when your livelihood depends on forces beyond your control.

Farming can be lonely work. Whether you’re working alone or far from family, that isolation can grow over time and lead to feelings of sadness, detachment or disconnection — even if you’re surrounded by other people.

Watching a family member or friend struggle with mental health can be just as hard as going through it yourself. Knowing what to say, how to help or where to turn can feel overwhelming — but support is available for you too.

Our mission is rooted in three simple but powerful pillars: education, support and community.

Education

We equip people with the tools they need to understand mental health and support one another by offering workshops and training that make mental health education practical, approachable and relevant to farm life.

Support

Through free, 24/7 counselling services tailored to the agricultural community, we make it easy to access professional help — anytime, anywhere and always confidential.

Community

By building networks of trained volunteers, peer advocates and local partners, we create strong connections that help individuals feel seen, supported and never alone.
